Born in San Francisco and raised in Montana, Mary Irwin was originally trained as a watercolor painter and sculptor. Her parents were both artists who found tremendous joy in watching their daughter be creative in many mediums - painting, sculpting, photography, piano and classical ballet. Her versatile but defined aesthetic was formed from experiences ranging from Opera and Ballet to working on farms.
She is also a co-founder of The Makeup Standard, a sanitation and best practices education website founded during the Covid-19 Pandemic. She and her co-founder partnered with the National Scientist Volunteer Database who provided a Surgeon, Virologist, Bio Chemist, Neuro-Oncology researcher, and a Neuroscience Phd candidate to answer their questions about Covid on set, and to help convert that information from science terminology to artist verbiage. The Makeup Artist Sanitation Standard went live in August 2020 in English and Spanish, and has been downloaded thousands of times globally. On behalf of The Makeup Standard, she has spoken as a sanitation and safety expert at multiple online educational events including The Makeup Show, The New England Complex Systems Institute Covid Community Action Project, and The Pro Beauty Safety Summit among others.
Mary’s laid back, down to earth manner gained from training horses and studying to be a professional dancer has translated flawlessly to working with teams all over the world. Growing up in theater embedded the importance of speed and timing.
Makeup became an interest after discovering Kevyn Aucoin’s books, and she realized it could be a career and not just a stage transformation. Leaving a successful horse training career behind, she dove headfirst into makeup.
After living in Dallas and Miami for a decade, she now resides in New York and is known for her accuracy and skill in both Makeup and Hair, as well as being quoted as a beauty expert in publications such as Allure, Wall Street Journal, Oprah, Glamour, New Beauty, Brides, Byrdie, Elle, Teen Vogue, Refinery 29, PopSugar, and today.com to name a few!
